Avery went to Goddard today. Here is his report.  Avery also spent his first night in his toddler bed. It went ok, except this morning he got up on his own to play with the big kids and then had a fit when I told him he needed to get dressed and have breakfast. So, it is a bit of getting a new routine down.

Big Kids:

  • We read “Greetings, Sun” from DER. Aaron read it and we answered the questions.
  • We did the practice book and “thinking cap” from the textbook and practice book in MIF Ch. 13, Lesson 6.
  • They did 2pp. of Sylvan and spelling words
  • Naim did worksheets and red Big Bad Ben in end of book review in HOP.
  • Aaron did Lesson 3 DVD and book in HOP.
  • Naim and I did a bunch of work with telling b and d apart. He practiced Bb and Dd on the iPad apps for handwriting.
  • Aaron did 2pp. in HWT.
  • They watched BrainPop about lasers and simple machines.
  • They finished up the magic schoolbus unit on air and we did a jet propulsion experiment with a balloon.
  • They played outside (big wheels, etc.) for 1 hour.

May 16, 2013

Avery went to ECSE today. And that is all I know about that. I am meeting with his teacher tomorrow.

Big Kids:

  • We are struggling a bit with subtraction with regrouping which has a lot to do with their lousy math facts. We did games for a few days to improve but tried to get back to it today. Aaron had a fit so he was dismissed. He will have to finish later. Naim and I did two pages of the book together. He can do it using blocks, but I don’t think he really gets what he is doing, because he cannot transfer it to paper without all the steps for blocks.
  • They did 2 pp. of sylvan
  • Aaron read “Smart Shark” and finished the Second Grade Level 1 package in Hooked on Phonics. We will start level 2 on Monday. I can see us finishing by end of summer if we work steadily at it. Then third grade with master reader is a good place to start.
  • Naim did the DVD and book for Lesson 16 in HOP. He has 16, 17 and the review to go and then he will also move up to First Grade Level 1.
  • Aaron did a page in HWT
  • Naim did Qq in ZB
  • We watched BrainPop about mass and grams/kilograms.
  • We did three experiments with Magic Schoolbus. One was about high and low pressure currents where we heated up a snake thingy made out of paper and made it spin. The other involved suffocating fire in different ways. One was with larger or smaller glasses to snuff it out. The other was by making a “fire extinguisher” out of baking soda and vinegar.

Avery went to ECSE. I still was not able to go, I think next week I will put big kids in WeVillage and go. It is getting a bit ridiculous.

Big Kids:

  • We worked on MIF, Ch. 13, Lesson 3, subtraction without regrouping. We did the textbook problems on the white board and they did pretty good.
  • They did Sylvan. Naim did 2 pages plus a game we skipped a few days ago where he had to make sentences out of cut out words. Aaron did 2 pages and did his spelling cards.
  • Aaron did HOP DVD Lesson 13. I showed him master reader and he got a bit scared of the chapter books. With good “attendance” we could be done with the rest of second grade HOP in about 2 months.
  • Naim did the review for Unit 3 in HOP. We used the flipbook for -en, -et, and -ed words.
  • Naim practiced letters on the ZB app on the iPad, we did capital A, C, D and E. That app seems to work well for him.
  • Aaron did a page in HWT, It was copy work today.
  • They watched BrainPop about earthquakes.
  • We did a science experiment in Magic Schoolbus. The first one we did worked out well, which was holding a piece of cardboard under an upside-down glass of water and it stays due to air pressure from below. The other one we struggled with. We were supposed to get ice chips in a soda bottle to make the inside air colder than the outside air, and we had significant trouble with that one.We may try again but it didn’t really work.

Avery went to Satanic School, I mean ECSE. As usual I have no clue. It is getting a bit ridiculous. He comes off the bus in a daze. At Goddard when we pick him up he is always happy and animated. I don’t know if it is the bus ride that puts him in a coma or if it is actually the program itself. That is why I gotta go visit! But since D is STILL in the goddamned hospital going on 4 months. I haven’t had child care. But I am going to have to just put them in WeVillage or something.

Big Kids:

  • We did the workbook pages for Ch. 13, Lesson 1 in MIF. Naim had a fit that escalated to a full-fledged screaming crazy thing that I can’t even tell you what it was about. I told him he couldn’t do his school work until he calmed down, which led to another fight. So the rest of the morning, I did school with Aaron and not Naim.
  • So…Aaron did 3 pp. of Sylvan and 5 spelling words.
  • He did the worksheets for HOP Lesson 10.
  • He did HWT 2pp. where he copied a poem.
  • We went to HFAC where they went to Kid Central. I am working on them getting into some classes there.
  • When we got back, we did the first experiment with Magic Schoolbus “Air” unit.
  • After, Naim did 3 pp. of Sylvan, and 2 worksheets for HOP. We did not get to handwriting today.

Avery went to ECSE.

Naim had his second assessment with Erika. It was a lot about showing him pictures and having him make up a story to go with the pictures. We are supposed to meet next week and discuss a plan.

Otherwise:

  • We did Lesson 1/Day one in CH. 12 of MIF. It was a good review of counting to 40 and place value.
  • Naim did 2 pp. of Sylvan, spelling words.
  • Naim did worksheets for Lesson 7 in HOP
  • Aaron did 2 pp. of Sylvan Spelling
  • Aaron did the workbook pages for lesson 2 in HOP
  • Aaron did magic C letters on the iPad and 2 pp in HWT reviewing magic C letters
  • Naim worked on vertical lines in ZB. He did a good job sitting still and having some control over what he was writing.
  • They did the cast fossil in Magic schoolbus, but Avery came along and tipped it, so they did not get to excavate it. You could see it was sort of a dinosaur, but the first one turned out so much better! And I kind of love plaster of paris.

Nik was home again today. His boss won’t let him come back till Tuesday because he is coughing so bad (but they have furlough tomorrow and MLK off Monday.) There are some vulnerable populations there, so they are fairly liberal with sick days. So he took Avery out to the bus for ECSE. Have not a clue what happened there. At some point, I will arrange to go visit again in a month or so.

Big Kids:

  • Naim finished Discoveries in Early Reading!!! YEA! We started that in fall of 2010. And got to a point where we had to stop. Took several months off (where he did actually finish watching the DVDs on his own), and then started back at the beginning again. Today he made his Letter Book that we have been working on all this time, read the story from the end of the series, and put on a puppet show. I will actually miss ZigZat and the Gelfins. : ) We will start Discoveries in Reading 1 next week with both kids. It will be a bit easy for Aaron, but not so much that he will be bored, I suspect. 
  • We did Ch. 10, Lesson 3, Day 2 in MIF, which was a workbook day. will wrap up the chapter next week.
  • Sylvan Spelling and books, 2pp. each.
  • Naim finished the HOP story he was screwing off with Tues., I had him redo it. Then we worked with the flip book on vowel sounds.
  • Aaron was going to do the first lesson of Second Grade HOP, but I screwed up and started him on the wrong level. So instead of making him do another, I just had him read through the review stuff at the beginning of the workbook.
  • Aaron did “t” in HWT.
  • Naim did a left/right activity in ZB. We even Hokey-Pokied. He did a page each in the practice and workbook on L/R stuff. He still goes back and forth on hand preference. Today, I think he is left-handed.
  • We watched Benjamin Franklin on BrainPop.
  • We did the first two “experiments” in Magic Schoolbus Fossil unit. The first was making a poster explaining the process of how fossils are made. The second was looking at a leaf fossil and drawing some observations of different parts. They have OMSI class tomorrow, which is also about fossils, and they should have an opportunity to see a lot of better fossil samples there than I have here.

A and N made up school today for Thursday. They should have school tomorrow, too, to make up for some of next week, but I promised them I would take them to the nursing home to see D tomorrow. Next week I have a cardiac test on Monday, The Children’s Museum with R on Thursday, and OMSI class on Friday. And the week after that I have a biopsy on Monday, and a vaccine appointment for Avery on Friday? Lots of appointments coming up. Hope to be able to get school in, so there may be more Saturday School coming. I think Nik is going to take them to OMSI and I am going to go with Avery to his new preschool class.

But today:

  • Naim did Lesson 37 of DER. Only two more to go! He really is doing well in reading and has not seemed to lose much over our long break like he usually does. I think having the iPod touch helps because he does have to struggle through some reading on that regularly.
  • Aaron read review words in the last review of HOP. He read “The Case of the Missing Sandwich” to Nik. He will have one more day of review and then we are through with the book.
  • We did Ch. 10 Lesson 2, Day 1 in MIF, where we weighed items using a random unit of measure (blocks in our case, they used marbles in the book.) We played a game of guess the weight of the mystery item, so that was fun.
  • They both did Sylvan Spelling and workbooks respectively.
  • Naim did the bonus workbook for Lesson 6 in HOP and reread the story.
  • Aaron did “s” in HWT
  • Naim did more cutting, and sorting of letters and letter sounds in ZB and some mazes. When you look at handwriting as an OT experience like they do in this book, you get a lot farther at getting down to the root of the problem. The more I think about it, the more I think HWT sucks and I should have started with ZB in the first place. Although Aaron is still doing HWT, but anything would have worked for him.
  • They watched BrainPop about Jack London.
  • They watched a BrainPop about the solar system and made a 3D model with Nik. I think we can wrap up that Magic Schoolbus now (solar system) and go on to the next one.
